On November 24th, the Opening Ceremony of the Center for Translation and International Communication Studies of FNU and the academic seminar on the theme “Translation, Rhetoric and International Communication” was held in Cangshan campus of FNU in the way of online and offline synchronously. The opening ceremony was attended by Yang Ping, Secretary of the Party Committee of Academy of Contemporary China, World Studies of China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration, Huang Shaorong, Deputy Director-General of Fujian Provincial Foreign Affairs Office, Wang Zhouyu, Director of the Department of International News and Economics of Fujian Provincial Foreign Affairs Office, Guan Yibiao, Director of Translation Office, Li Xuan, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of FNU, the principals of Publicity Department, Social Science Administration, Office of International Cooperation and Exchange and School of Communication, as well as leading group, teachers and students representatives of College of Foreign Languages.
Zhang Bing, Director of the Foreign Language Department of Peking University Press, sent a video congratulation. More than 100 experts in related fields, teachers and postgraduates from many universities participated in the academic seminar, including Shanghai International Studies University, Hebei Normal University, Xiamen University, and Fuzhou University, as well as College of Foreign Languages, School of Communication and College of Chinese Language and Literature in FNU.
In her welcome speech, Li Xuan hoped that the research center would take the responsibility of carrying out high-quality international translation and communication and create a high-level cultural exchange window to tell Chinese stories and spread Chinese voice more stereoscopically and comprehensively. Yang Ping pointed out that the research center organically integrates translation and international communication to realize interdisciplinary practice and research, hoping to strengthen communication and cooperation with FNU in the future. Huang Shaorong pointed out that the establishment of the research center will more effectively promote the construction of translation talents, especially Chinese-into-English high-end talents, and the communication and mutual learning of Chinese and foreign civilizations by realizing the coordinated development of foreign translation ability and international communication ability. Zhang Bing reviewed the contributions of Fujian translators to China's foreign exchange since modern times, and introduced the academic cooperation between the Foreign Language Department of Peking University Press and FNU. Huang Shaorong, Li Xuan and the principals of College of Foreign Languages and the research center jointly inaugurated the research center.
At the seminar, Professor Han Ziman of Shanghai International Studies University, Professor Li Zhengshuan of Hebei Normal University and Professor Chen Xiaowei of Fuzhou University gave wonderful lectures entitled English literature and English world – the Enlightenment of English literature research on Chinese literature translation research, Construction of Translation and International Communication Capacity, and Rhetorical Problems of Translation Communication. In the academic workshop that day, Professor Chen Xiaowei of Fuzhou University and Dr. Yang Ying of Xiamen University exchanged academic views and academic experiences with teachers and students of College of Foreign Languages, School of Communication and College of Chinese Language and Literature of FNU focusing on the theme “Rhetoric and International Communication”.
