Recently, the College of Foreign Languages invited Dr. Doran, President of the Australian Society for Systematic Functional Linguistics (ASFLA), to give a lecture entitled Building complex knowledge: A case study of physics to students and faculty members via the Internet.

In the lecture, Dr. Doran adopted an interdisciplinary research method to explore the construction of complex knowledge in physics from the perspective of Legitimation Code Theory and Systemic Functional Linguistics. Dr. Doran first discussed the construction of physical knowledge through two dimensions of semantic density and semantic gravity under the perspective of Legitimation Code Theory, revealing how physics constructs complex knowledge based on real life. Then, he explored the multimodal construction of subject knowledge from the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics, in order to understand how multimodal resources (language, mathematical symbols and images, etc.) contribute to the meaning construction of complex knowledge in physics. In Q&A session, Dr. Doran gave detailed answers to the questions raised by teachers and students, and the interactive atmosphere was active.

This lecture is one of the series of activities of the Science and Technology Festival of the College of Foreign Languages. Shi Chunxu, professor of the College of Foreign Languages, presided over the lecture, and You Zeshun, vice dean of the college, delivered a welcome speech. Nearly 300 scholars, teachers and students from inside and outside the university attended the lecture.
